I have found a point in my timeline where there is an overlap of both a short Active event (8min) and a longer Away event (3+hr).

It's not causing me any actual problems, but any guesses how it happened?

Usually it happens when system time is corrected. You can check ManicTime.log file (Help -> Pack log files) at the time it happened. If it was because of system time change there should be an entry, something like Changing time....

If it was not because of time change we can enable tracker log, which basically records all the tracking in a log file before it is written to the database and the next time it happens we will know more about it.

ok, I only found it long after the fact, and the log doesn't seem to go back that far - it was filled with failed connection entries to a second instance of ManicTimeServer on an offline laptop.

While 8 minutes seems an aweful long time shift for a clock sync, I will keep this in mind if I see it again.
