I'm using the standard version. When I try to open the tag editor, it's greyed out. Is this by design? Do I need to upgrade to edit tags?

Yes.
In the free version you can rename or delete tags on Day view.
Click on Tag timeline to select it. Right click on some tag in bottom right corner, choose All instances, Rename...
