Hi all,

Regarding automatic recording of computer usage,
I suppose I can only get a part of benefits of Manic time tool.

Away time is almost not detected, all running time is recorded as 'Active'.
During I left from my PC, record will be active with MS-Outlook, MS-Word and so on.

I suspect that away time will be recorded only when no application and file is opened.
If I left spread sheet or document or e-mail in progress on my PC,
that period will be recorded as 'active' time with those application and files.

I believe this phenomenon is not a specification of this tool.
How should I configure this tool to recover from this situation?

I have checked previous forum discussion but I can not find related issue.

In Tools and Settings -> Settings -> Tracking Mark time as Away, do you have this set to Screen saver or Computer is not used for...

If you are using screen saver option, try using the other one, screen saver can be unreliable.

If you have it set to Computer not used for ... then there can be a number of things. The way this works is Windows remembers the last time mouse or keyboard were used and MT just checks this time. It could be that something is reseting this value. For example one user had some kind of a microphone attached and it would reset this all the time. The result was the same as what you are seeing. Let me know if you are using this option and we will try to figure it out.

Thanks for the quick feed back.

The current configuration of Tracking is 'Computer is not used for 5 minutes'.
And check box 'Track window title...' is enabled.


I understood basic mechanism of away time tracking.
Maybe something may reset blank time.

What sort of things can you imagine instead of microphone?
Microphone is not connected on my PC.
I suspect running task may disturb this feature.

Connected peripherals are :-
- USB)Wireless Mouse adaptor (MS natual wireless laser mouse 6000)
- USB)Keyboard (MS natural ergonomics keyboard 4000)
- USB)connection cable for celellor phone ( phone is not connected at almost time.)
- Speaker cable
- Power supply
- Display cable

Background running task:
- Manic time
- Outlook
- Smart defrag
- Virus baster
- Hibun (another security tool)
- QND

Environment:
Windows XP SP3
Core2 Duo E8600 3.33GHz
4GB RAM (3.5GB enabled)

Try running this app. It will show you time from last interaction with computer. So if you will not move the mouse or press any keys, counter should start increasing. When you move your mouse, counter should get back to zero. If inactivity will be longer than 30 seconds it will write an entry into bottom window.

Thank you very much for this investigation tool 'MTInactivityTest'.

MS Intellitype and Intellipoint prevent to detect blank time.
The latest version 8.0 of these tools should not be installed :-)

By msconfig tool, I have tried to turn off all auto-start up tools on windows,
Then enable one by one.
When MS Intellitype or Intellipoint are enabled, MTInactivityTest tool stop counting.

Now, I uninstalled ver.8 Intelli*, re-install older version bundle with mouse and keyboard hardwares.
It works correctly. And screen saver is also effective again. ( That was not worked either previously. )
