be able to move to by event w/ l/r arrow keys, rather than only by mouse
shift arrow to highlight

You mean on the timelines when you are dragging to select time?
Currently there is no cursor unless the mouse is over. I guess it should start at left if it isn't already visible. Then shift r/l when you want to select.
Worth a try.
